Pedorthists are trained foot health specialists who assess, design, manufacture, fit and modify foot orthoses and footwear for the purpose of alleviating painful or debilitating conditions.  To certify as a Canadian Certified Pedorthist C Ped (C), a person must have a University degree in the health care field and meet the certification standards of the College of Pedorthics of Canada.

Pedorthists can help alleviate conditions such as bunions, plantar calluses, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, pes planus, pes cavus, and other  problems associated with the  arch of the foot. Treating foot problems can also impact conditions affecting the knee, hip, and lower back.

On your first visit you should bring:

  • A prescription from a healthcare professional (physician or other professional) for custom-made orthotics and an indication of the condition that requires pedorthic care.
  • Details about your insurance including the name of the insurance company.
  • Two pairs of shoes that you have worn for some time and will wear with the orthotics.

When you return for a follow-up and fitting of the orthotics, please bring the shoes in which you will insert the orthotics.

Several workplace benefits include coverage for custom made orthotics. Other organizations that offer coverage include: Veterans Affairs Canada (DVA), Workers Safety Insurance Board (WSIB), First Nations (NIHB), RCMP, military, etc…

At your initial assessment we want to understand your needs and review factors that are contributing to your pain.

Next, a comprehensive biomechanical assessment and gait analysis is performed.

A treatment plan is created and explained to address your specific health goals. This may include custom made orthotics, bracing, footwear recommendations, exercises, prevention and self-care options.

Custom foot orthotics are custom-made devices that are inserted into footwear (shoes, boots, skates, high heels, sandals, etc…) to support, align, and/or accommodate foot dysfunctions and improve foot functions. Orthotic devices can be used for all ages and can usually be fitted into almost any type of footwear.
